Can you wear a gumshield with braces?
Yes — and if you play contact sport it's important you do. A gumshield helps protect your teeth, lips and braces from knocks. It just needs to be made to fit around your brackets and wires.
Why can't I use the home impression kit?
Impression putty can grip around brackets and wires, making it difficult to remove and giving an inaccurate impression. A dentist can take the impression or a digital scan safely and accurately, so your guard fits properly around your braces.
Can my own dentist or orthodontist do it?
Yes. Choose “I'll use my own dentist” on the form and we'll send instructions they can use to order a custom sports guard from Bridge Dental Laboratory, the lab behind Gumshields.com.
What if I don't have a dentist?
Choose “Suggest a practice near me” and we'll put you in touch with a dental practice near you that works with our lab.
How much does it cost?
The practice sets the price, as it includes their clinical time for the impression and fitting. Ask them for a quote when you book.
Will it still fit as my teeth move?
Your teeth move during treatment, so a guard may need adjusting or remaking as your braces work. Ask your dentist or orthodontist how often to check the fit.
I wear clear aligners. Do I need this route?
Talk to your orthodontist first. Many aligner wearers take their aligners out for sport, but your teeth are moving, so they're best placed to advise when to have an impression taken.
